Zevia promises that classic cola flavor with more caffeine and nothing artificial. It sets lofty expectations, helped by a nifty twelve ounce can that is unfortunately grounded quickly by way too much text. Look, I understand we need to showcase all our gimmicks, but it halts the organic flow of the design.
The flavor is certainly a cola, no doubt about it. Problem is its diet upbringing, the stevia sweetener acting alone and simply cannot withstand the assumptions of the soda taste. There is a murky mention of vanilla, lost in a huge influx of holiday spice, an indeterminate concoction of what resembles nutmeg and cinnamon, but not freshly ground- this is from those old tins in the back of your grandma's spice rack. It has a slightly smoky bite of cloves as well, but everything is let down by the sweetness, missing the necessary mouthfeel and solid foundation. Sips are hollow and empty, a medicinal cocktail that never resembles anything found in nature, or even found in a nature food store. Citrus, one of the three pillars of the standard cola profile, is no where to be found, and that is a shame- though it is easy to sip, the experience is massively incomplete.
We have 120 milligrams of caffeine, nothing more and nothing less. It is a clean buzz, a two hour long kick without jitters or a crash. Overall, Zevia Kōla makes far too many mistakes, ranging from inconsequential to imperative, to ever find success.
