The company's first permanent potable in over a decade, Mtn Dew Major Melon gets zero excitement from me. Why? Aside from the brand's hugely rocky history, melon is something rarely done well in the potation spectrum. All too often they are too sweet, a common criticism for Mtn Dew as well, and that potential combination fills my fingers with dread as I twist the green cap.
To my surprise, the flavor is not that bad, emphasis on the italicization. It rests so closely on the verge of excess, but fans of the brand will no doubt gobble this stuff up by the bottle. As for flavor, well, it is tasted independently from all possible sugariness. Demonstrating just a touch of acidity, it is derived from the core Mtn Dew flavor profile, extracted to its pure essence, making for a relatively clean experience. But thanks to seventy three grams of sugar, which equates to 146% of your daily intake mind you, it does not take long for your palate to be drenched in its sticky sweetness. Exclusively from high fructose corn syrup, you almost need to wring out your tongue for relief from the redundant saccharinity. Each sips layers on another coat of the tacky carbohydrate, and by the time you have depleted about half of the plastic transport, the back of your throat is clogged with its aggressive potency.
Along with the aforesaid amount of sugar, we have ninety three milligrams of caffeine, along with the usual soda software, including water, flavors, acids, preservatives, etc,. This all makes for 270 calories, which somehow is not the most the brand has pumped out before (their Dark Berry version, for example, had 290 calories and seventy seven grams of sugar). Overall, Mtn Dew Major Melon does not show soft drinks in a good light.
