NX Speed Freak Energy Drink Review

NX Speed Freak is the sugared version of NX Lean & Mean, and its label design retains all that made Lean attractive. The colour scheme is mainly black and red, with some silver trim; and it all works quite well. The colours don't clash with each other, and the background pattern is cool even if it's hard to notice. One thing I just realized is that all the varieties of NX have a different vehicle on them, and while the formula one race car fits its sub name, it is difficult to differentiate from the background.

When the liquid first meets your taste buds, there's a pleasant mango flavour that, unlike its sugar free sibling, is engulfed in a soft carbonation. The sweetness isn't brash, and it complements the mango in a realistic manner. The mango isn't boring, but rather piquant, yet it avoids being pungent. There's a certain mellow tartness that feels natural with the flavour as a whole. Mango really is the drinks main focus, but there are calm notes of passion fruit and papaya. The passion fruit is predominate, but it's less sweet than the papaya. The papaya itself closely tastes like a tangerine/peach cross, but there's a distinct attribute that could only be from the said fruit. The aftertaste is purely a reminder of what you just drank, if not an abbreviation of the flavour, and it's entirely enjoyable. Overall, NX Speed Freak tasted similar to many other mango-themed drinks, but the mere quality of the flavour ensures this is one of the best of its kind.

Each bottle contains: quercetin, vitamin B3, C, and caffeine(240mg). Per oz., its caffeine content is fairly typical, but at twenty four oz., it was enough to energize me for four hours. The high amount of sugar also perked me up, though there was a slight sugar crash. In the end, NX Speed Freak is a an energy drink that you'll enjoy all three hundred calories of.

NX Lean & Mean Energy Drink Review

NX Lean & Mean is the sugar free version of NX Speed Freak, and while its sub name "Lean and Mean" sounds great, it doesn't have too much to do with vehicles, like the other varieties in the line. The bottle, unlike NX Hot Fuel, is black, and it perfectly offsets the silver and blue colour scheme of the label. The design itself is busy, with text clashing against the background pattern. And while overall it remains edgy and gives of a "tough" vibe, I would like it cleaned up a bit. Some of the text is rather useless, like "Crash-proof Energy" and "with Quercetin." I believe they're intended to be selling points, but they just end up being pointless.

Continuing the tradition of strange and unsightly colours, Lean and Mean pours out a neon yellow that resembles hyper brightened banana puree. The almost harsh bubbly liquid has a vibrant mango taste as its initial focal point, with strong following notes of apple, grapefruit, and papaya. The Papaya soon blends evenly with the mango, and the grapefruit trails behinds, continually gaining strength, but never reaching its potential. The power of the flavour braid then quickly diminishes to a much smoother, albeit an abridged version of its once more complex, if not complete self. Then a fairly tangy and sour taste of guava surfaces, but it doesn't add much to the flavour. There's a mild sugar free taste that then appears, and it's cleverly intertwined with the still rough carbonation, which ends up making the experience taste like the formulators weren't limited by the sugar free marking. All in all, when compared to other similar looking lines(cough NOS cough), Lean and Means flavour is easy to drink and tastes great.

Being 300 calories and seventy five gram of sugar less than Hot Fuel, Lean and Mean didn't give me an instant rush of energy, but instead a more gradual building kick that lasted about the same amount of hours; four. Each bottles contains: caffeine(240mg), quercetin, vitamin C, and vitamin B3. Overall, I think that taste-wise, NX Lean & Mean will inadvertently draw strong comparisons to the highly regarded xenergy Mango Guava. And while it's not quite as good, being compared is an honor in itself.

NX Hot Fuel Energy Drink Review

I'm a huge fan of energy drinks with resealable bottles, so while I'm glad that NX Hot Fuel comes in one, it's not the best I've come across. It's hard not to liken the design to NOS, with it's bottle shape and name origin being similar, and while NX's label, I feel, is vastly superior, the white bottle is just so unfitting. Why they didn't make the bottle clear like a soda, or use the same colour the other varieties in the line use is beyond me, and a real poor decision on their part.

NX Hot Fuel splashes out of the bottle a gross thick and milky pink that reminds me a lot of ear ache medicine. Thankfully, it tastes a whole lot better than it looks. It's light, mildly carbonated, and the main flavour is the typical fruit punch braid; apple, guava, passion fruit, tangerine, and cherry, however, they're less natural tasting and more candy-like than most other energy punches. There's heavy focus initially on the passion fruit and guava, both of which share equal power. The apple and cherry underlie that blend, and although the cherry is by far weakest fruit in the experience, both are nothing more than hints. The tangerine only appears during the transition to the gentle finish, and I say it's a gentle finish as the bite is modest. There's no amount of tartness or sourness to the flavour, however there's a slight grainy texture towards the end. It's quite obvious why NX Hot Fuel didn't come in a clear bottle, as its colour is unsightly, but it's also apparent why it doesn't come in a size smaller than twenty four oz., because it's quickly finished and easily enjoyed.

With twenty four oz. comes caffeine(240mg), quercetin, vitamin C and B3, and although it's lacking several key ingredients, like taurine, guarana, and other B vitamins, the sheer amount of caffeine did a good job providing a solid rush. I was energized for over four hours, and though afterwords I could tell I wasn't as awake as I once was, I wouldn't call it a "crash." All in all, NX Hot Fuel tasted and kicked well above average, but flaws like the liquid and bottle colour keep me from hailing it as a must own.
