Fans of The Caffeine King no doubt recall that way back in 2013 we ran a review on the reduced calorie variation of this drink; it was just OK, but that did not stop the company from repurposing its product into the more familiar energy drink can. A wise decision when you consider competitors in the RTD marketplace like Monster and Starbucks doing the same. Or perhaps not, when you notice its position in my local store- sitting in the dairy department, and its cheap-feeling shrink wrapped container. These bewildering decisions do nothing but, well, bewilder.
220 calories. Thirty five grams of sugar. Five grams of fat, three of which are of the saturated variety. If that does not make your imaginary belt burst, then sit back, sip on, and enjoy what is essentially a canned caffeinated milkshake. "Macchiato" is of course espresso with a touch of milk, and this is the classic American bastardization of the barista beverage, right down to its ooey-gooey texture and complete absence of any actual java taste. Trust in my tongue- the beans portrayed on the front of the label are nothing more than a marketing ploy, there is not one moment where the divine decoction makes an appearance. Caramel is just an excuse for supplementary sweetness, no doubt where the "natural and artificial flavors" become involved. They are missing that purported burnt characterization, a one-dimensional feature that does not have the strength to carry the entire fifteen ounces. The experience thusly fails to understand the basics of what it should be doing, which is of course, represent coffee.
After all that, we get just ninety milligrams of caffeine, but hey do not worry, I did not forget that this is not an energy drinks (it just looks like one). The buzz is nothing more than your usual two hour long one, no doubt influenced by all the empty carbohydrates. In the end, Caramel Macchiato Iced Coffee proves that International Delight should stick to the coffee creamer category.
