Red Bull pulls yet another unique energy drink flavor in The Pear Edition Sugar Free, called "crisp pear" in the bottom right of the can. The design is what we have come to expect from the brand, but the forest green color is just a bit too similar to the brighter coloring found on the brand's earlier Lime Sugar Free flavor, to the point where I nearly left this drink on the shelf in casual confusion.
You taste the pear, front and center, tasted ahead of a distant apple and a squirt of lemon, a rather basic flavor profile done with flair and sparsity that has every soft spoken imbibe tasting more complex than it really is. Pear's subtle flavoring is nailed pretty well on the head here; you can practically feel the fresh juices dripping down your neck with each sip. However it is the sweetener system that fails the experience. A blend of the familiar sucralose and acesulfame potassium, it lacks the grace or care of the fruit you enjoy when biting fresh into the distinctly shaped produce. It is a pity too, reducing the delicate interpretation into an overly sweet potable of commerciality with a slightly medicinal aftertaste.
114 milligrams of caffeine, some B vitamins, and taurine are about all we get in the energy department, and all we get is an hour and a half long buzz from it. Overall, Red Bull The Pear Edition Sugar Free comes so close to goodness that it gets a mild thumbs up. A very mild, "comes with some reservations" recommendation.
