The Alani Nu brand keeps on surprising, at least when it comes to their inconsistencies. Where as other entries at least hint towards their alleged flavor (Mimosa, for example), today's potable of choice calls itself "Hawaiian Shaved Ice," which last time I checked, is not its own flavor. The shrink-wrapped label makes no effort to explain what the hell to expect, neither does the website, leaving the consumer in the dark for no reason.
Coconut was not what my palate anticipated, a fruit that not so much as greets your tastebuds but rather smashes through your teeth to choke them. It is a domineering interpretation of an ordinarily passive produce, allowing for very little variety to be experienced before the energy collapses and the liquid fades from your tongue's memory. Pineapple, cherry, and passion fruit are nuances drowning in a coconut water sea of dimensionlessness, elements demanding fair chance to shine only to be wiped out before the gulp completes. Despite its relative simplicity, there is practically no aftertaste, your mouth scrubbed squeaky clean of any influence from the contents of the twelve ounce can. This works in the flavor's favor, as its brevity has you savor each sip, lifting the aluminum up against your lips as soon as the last imbibe leaves your conscious. You find yourself studying it, an unlikely activity when consuming an energy drink, though you are not particularly enjoying it.
The most constant aspect of the brand is its potency, with 200 milligrams of caffeine powering a three hour kick. Other ingredients include B vitamins, taurine, ginseng, inositol, guarana and others. To end, Alani Nu Hawaiian Shaved Ice will not win any awards for, well, just about anything, but I do recommend it, if only for its unbridled commitment to the unusual.
